Discuss: How is the Social Media Tsunami Affecting Relationships?

For better or for worse, I believe that social media have impacted our world as much as the telephone or the electric light. In particular the ubiquitous phenomenon of “sharing” our lives online must be affecting human relationships in many ways.

I agree that social media has had a massive impact on relationships. Both good and bad. It’s all a matter of how you are using your social media accounts.

The main thing is that it is easy to find people from the past and get in contact with them. This can have lots of positives and lots of negatives!

Hi Buddy,
I agree that social media is affecting relationships. Here are my first thoughts:
The negative: we share superficially online with many friends and acquaintances instead of sharing more deeply with our closer circle. This is bound to have a negative impact on the level of intimacy in our lives over time.
The positive: because so many of us are online we’re able to reconnect with important people with whom we’ve lost touch over time…such a wonderful thing!

Social Media has definitely impacted how we relate. Some people say things boldly online that they wouldn’t otherwise. That is good in some cases and in others it appears cowardly. But, there are some neat relationships that have been formed through social media channels, relationships that break the bounds of geography that would not have been formed otherwise. I think this is one of the neat effects.

I sure notice how big the relationship status question is among my single friends. Seems to be a huge deal. I can even track the fights often. Not sure that is an improvement.

I have been a social media dilettante since Compuserve and the 300 baud modem. So what We now call social media is a comfortable way for me of relating. Many of my online relationships are as important to me as a real life close friend or family member. I am still in grief after recently losing a friend who I only knew as text on the screen and an avatar.

Now with Skype and Google Hangouts I suspect more people to form and have virtual friends and relationships. I have been catfished before the term even existed but it is worth risking as the benefits of online relationships out weigh the drawbacks of those who prefer to be deceptive. There is a psychological element to the way we interact online today. Its social in the same aspects as meeting people in real life within many ways.

I think that social media is generally a negative thing. It makes relationships shallow and facile. It also means that everything that I do and my life history has to be shared with people that I do not want to share my life with. That is why I refuse to use social media other than to promote things.

I think it all depends on how and what one shares online. Through social media I have been able to meet a lot of wonderful people, outside my family/friends circle, from all over the world. This helps in understanding things from different perspective and that in turn not only impacts the family/friend relationships in a positive way but also makes this world a better place!

I strongly believe that social media is affecting relationships. We have overcome the distance barrier because now you may build new relationships breaking the bounds of geography that would not have been formed otherwise What I found very interesting is the fact that some poeple thin using social media at work is wrong.
