Engage

Relationships online are formed by engaging in conversations and interacting. Commenting on another person’s posts or status updates is just as important as posting your own content. Following up and responding to the comments of others gives them attention and recognition, which are important human needs.

Invest Attention

Old fashioned push advertising or brochure-like web sites are impotent. Paying (investing) attention to what others are saying (writing) online is the beginning of a real relationship. It is more effective to be interested than to be interesting!

The idea of engagement deserves repeating and emphasizing. It seems obvious, but most people do not practice it enough — including me…

It is my sincere intention to engage in more conversation and interaction in social networks and communities in 2013.

    Buddy,

    It’s so true what you’ve said. I know I tend to step over the all important piece of getting to know someone before discussing business. The impersonality of the Internet seems to allow for that. Or, at least, it used to.

    As our electronic world evolves a new set of manners need to be engaged. Meeting someone online is very different than in person and special care must be taken to adjust.

    Thanks for the reminder and letting us get to know you a little.

    Hi Buddy,

    Meeting someone online is different than meeting them in person. It does take a longer time to build relationships.

    In the real time world, we can walk into a place, chat, exchange cards, and follow up. But on the internet with billions of people on it, it does take a while to build trust.

    It is like going to a party in slow motion.

    Hey Buddy,

    You are right, we need to engage and interact to build real relationships. Sure, it will take lot of time and effort to do so, but in the end, it will be worth it.

    We should go out, comment, share and build the relationship without expecting anything in return (of course, with time comes reciprocation).
